Economy minister: Azerbaijan will continue to remain Tbilisi's strategic partner

Georgian Economy Minister Mariam Kvriivishvili stated that the decisive factor for signing a large-scale package of agreements between Georgia and Azerbaijan was the visit of Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev to Tbilisi and his meeting with the founder of the Georgian Dream party, its honorary chairman and billionaire Bidzina Ivanishvili.

Minister noted that after the negotiations the parties began to move "very effectively and quickly" toward finalizing the agreements.

Kvriivishvili called the signed agreements "historic" for both countries, especially emphasizing the importance of energy cooperation for Georgia.

The politician added that the new agreements will strengthen Georgia's energy security, and Azerbaijan will continue to remain Tbilisi's strategic partner in this direction.

Recall that on May 18 Georgia and Azerbaijan signed a package of agreements in the fields of energy and transport. It included a 20-year intergovernmental agreement on electricity supplies and transit, as well as a 20-year extension of the contract for Azerbaijani gas supplies in effect since 2003, which, according to Georgian authorities, will ensure stability of social gas supply in the country.

In addition, starting May 26 a daily passenger train will begin running between Tbilisi and Baku.
