In Azerbaijan it will be possible to observe the Bootids meteor shower - DATE
From June 22 to July 2, the Bootids meteor shower will be observable.
As reported by 1news.az, this information was released by the Department of Astrophysics of Baku State University (BSU).
It was noted that the peak of the meteor shower is expected on June 27 at approximately 21:00 Baku time.
“This meteor shower is called so because its radiant is located in the constellation Bootes. When observed from Baku, the radiant remains above the horizon throughout the night, creating favorable conditions for observations. The source of this meteor shower is comet 7P/Pons-Winnecke. This comet was discovered in 1819 and completes one orbit around the Sun in approximately 6.37 years. The meteor shower occurs when particles of dust and small rocks left by the comet along its orbit cross Earth’s orbit.
Upon entering Earth’s atmosphere, the meteors move at a speed of about 18 km/s. This speed is relatively low compared to other known meteor showers. For this reason, the June Bootids may appear in the sky as slower-moving meteors leaving long trails. The June Bootids are a highly variable meteor shower. In ordinary years, during maximum activity, only 1 to 5 meteors per hour are observed. However, outbursts of unusual activity have been recorded in history. In 1916, hundreds of meteors per hour were observed, in 1998 about 50–100, and in 2004 from 20 to 50 meteors per hour. In 2026, weak or moderate activity of the stream is expected. In addition, during the peak the Moon will be almost in full moon phase, and bright moonlight will make it difficult to see faint meteors.”
