A new island has appeared in the Caspian Sea

A new island has appeared in the Caspian Sea, Yerbolat Mukhashov, founder of the company Caspian Holiday, told Lada.kz.

"One of the recently appeared islands — Rybachy — is located to the east of Svyatoy Island. The new island is about 500 m east of Svyatoy Island and approximately 30 km from the village of Bautino [in the Tupkaragan district of Kazakhstan's Mangystau region]," Mukhashov said.

According to him, in the northern part of the sea, in particular in the area of the islands with Caspian seals (Kulaly, Morskoy, Svyatoy, Podgorny, Usharal, Mayakshykkan, Dolgy), new islands have begun to appear in recent years. He attributes this to the falling level of the Caspian Sea.

Mukhashov said that wolves live on the islands, and wild boars and badgers are also found there.

There are various species of fish and birds.

Last summer, the Institute of Oceanology of the Russian Academy of Sciences reported the appearance of a new island 30 km southwest of Maly Zhemchuzhny Island due to the shallowing of the Caspian Sea. "Initially, the drying of the bank was noticed on satellite images by staff of the Caspian branch of the Institute of Oceanology of the Russian Academy of Sciences in November 2024, but the question of the island's existence remained debatable until recently. The discovered island was formed as a result of the drop in the level of the Caspian Sea and the emergence of the Srednyaya Zhemchuzhnaya bank above the surface," the scientists said at the time.

In early 2025, NASA satellites detected a "ghost" island in the Caspian Sea, which soon disappeared. It emerged from under the water near the coast of Azerbaijan in early 2023 after the eruption of a mud volcano, but by the end of 2024 it had been washed away.
