Merz calls CDU's election failure a heavy blow

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz stated that the Christian Democratic Union's (CDU) failure in the state elections in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania is a heavy blow that will have long-term consequences for the party.

"These elections mark a profound turning point. For the CDU in Germany, this is a dramatic, unprecedented result: we were unable to clear the five percent threshold, and an entire parliamentary faction is out of the state parliament. This is a heavy blow that will have long-term consequences for us; we will have to discuss these results for a long time to come," Merz said at a press conference in Berlin.

Such a result, in his words, "is also due to the fact that there was a sharp escalation of the struggle between the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD) and the Alternative for Germany (AfD), as a result of which the CDU in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania suffered a crushing defeat, ultimately failing to return to the state parliament." For that, as Merz explained, the party was short by literally a thousand votes.
