The Draconid meteor shower will be visible in Azerbaijan

From October 6 to 10, the Draconid meteor shower will be visible. The peak of the meteor shower will occur at approximately 11:00 p.m. on October 9, at which time about 5 meteors per hour are expected to fall.

As reported by the Department of Astrophysics of the Faculty of Physics at Baku State University (BSU), the meteor shower got its name because its source (radiant) is located in the constellation Draco, 1news.az reports.

It is noted that the Draconid meteor shower is best observed in the Northern Hemisphere. Azerbaijan is also located in a geographical position favorable for observations. One of the important differences between the Draconids and other meteor showers is that they are convenient to observe in the evening and during the first half of the night.

The fact that the peak of the Draconid meteor shower in 2026 falls at approximately 11:00 p.m. Baku time is favorable for Azerbaijani observers. In addition, since the maximum coincides with the new moon phase, moonlight will not be a hindrance. No telescope or binoculars are needed to observe the meteor shower. It is best to choose an open and dark area away from city lights and watch as large an area of the sky as possible with the naked eye.
