45-year-old Alonso has decided to stay in Formula 1

Fernando Alonso has confirmed that he will continue his career in Formula 1 and will spend at least one more season with Aston Martin.

The Spanish driver's decision brought an end to discussions about his future in the championship that had continued for several months.

The 45-year-old Alonso, who is competing in his 23rd season in Formula 1, admitted that he did not immediately settle on his future plans. According to him, one of the main arguments in favor of continuing his career was the feeling that he is still able to compete at a high level.

"I still feel fast, motivated and I have a huge passion for Formula 1 and for this sport," Alonso said. He also noted that racing remains a most important part of his life.

The Spaniard said that he had thought for a long time about possibly ending his career, including the option of continuing to work with the team in a different role. In the end, however, he decided to stay behind the wheel.

In making his decision, Alonso took into account not only his own readiness to continue competing, but also Aston Martin's prospects. The 2026 season is shaping up to be a difficult one for the team, since, against the backdrop of the change in technical regulations, the outfit has faced problems with competitiveness and with the characteristics of the new Honda power unit. Alonso has previously criticized certain aspects of the new rules on numerous occasions.

At the same time, the driver stated that he continues to see potential in the Aston Martin project. The new contract covers the 2027 season, and his teammate will remain Lance Stroll. The team emphasized that both drivers will continue to work on the outfit's long-term objectives.

For Alonso, the new season will be his 24th full championship in Formula 1. The two-time world champion made his debut in the "pinnacle of motorsport" in 2001 and holds the record for the number of starts in the championship.
