Polish MoD: US will not reduce military contingent in country

The US does not plan to reduce its military presence in Poland; negotiations are underway to increase it.

This was stated to journalists by Polish Defense Minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysh.

"I would like to reassure everyone - the number of American troops in Poland is not decreasing, we are working on increasing their number," the minister said at a press conference broadcast by the TVP Info channel.

Kosiniak-Kamysh reiterated that Washington's decision to cancel the dispatch of 4,000 troops to Poland is related to the "reorganization" of American forces in Europe. The politician added that he and Polish Army Chief of the General Staff Weslaw Kukula had spoken by phone with US military leadership on the matter.

The minister also stressed that Washington has not yet made a decision on increasing the contingent in Poland either.

The day before, Defense News and Army Times reported, citing the Pentagon, that Washington had canceled plans to send 4,000 troops to Poland. In total, about 10,000 American troops are stationed on Polish territory on a permanent and rotational basis.
