Trump rejects Iran's proposal to open the Strait of Hormuz and end hostilities
U.S. President Donald Trump said he had rejected Iran's proposal, which envisaged opening the Strait of Hormuz and ending hostilities in the Middle East.
Tehran presented the initiative during the UN General Assembly in New York and conveyed it to the American side through Qatari mediators. Iran claimed the agreement would have made it possible to restore shipping through the strait within seven days and halt hostilities in the region.
"I rejected their proposal. I rejected their deal," Trump told reporters at the White House, adding that the proposed terms were unacceptable for the United States.
According to Reuters, the Iranian plan called for lifting the American naval blockade of Iranian ports, unblocking Tehran's frozen assets, and easing sanctions on Iranian oil exports. In exchange, Iran was ready to open the Strait of Hormuz and end hostilities, including in Lebanon.
The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the key routes for global oil trade, and its effective closure over seven months has damaged global energy supplies and the world economy.
