Baku hands protest note to EU ambassador in Azerbaijan

On May 1, the European Union Ambassador to Baku, Marijana Kujundžić, was summoned to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan.

During the meeting, the unfounded and biased provisions against Azerbaijan contained in the European Parliament's resolution of April 30 were strongly condemned. In this regard, a protest note was handed to the opposite side.

It was emphasized that the provisions of this resolution distort reality and contradict the principles of objectivity, as well as the obligations to respect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of states. It was noted that such an approach by the European Parliament negatively affects the normalization process in the region, as well as the prospects for relations between Azerbaijan and the European Union.

It was stated that the claims made in the resolution regarding the return of Armenian residents to the Karabakh region are completely unfounded, and such calls are tantamount to interference in Azerbaijan's internal affairs. It was conveyed that, despite the reintegration plan presented in 2023 in accordance with the Constitution of Azerbaijan, Armenian residents left the region voluntarily, and statements to the contrary are false.

Furthermore, it was noted that calls for the release of individuals of Armenian origin, presented as "prisoners of war," are unacceptable from a legal perspective. It was reminded that the Azerbaijani side, demonstrating a humanitarian approach, has released many detainees and taken steps to build trust. However, the individuals who have received court sentences committed a range of serious crimes, including terrorism, sabotage, and war crimes.

It was stressed that the claims of "destruction of cultural and religious heritage" are entirely baseless and unacceptable. Attention was drawn to the disregard by European institutions of the facts of large-scale destruction and desecration of Azerbaijan's cultural and religious heritage during the period of occupation.

During the meeting, the Azerbaijani side urged the European Union to refrain from such actions that harm relations between Azerbaijan and the EU, as well as the process of peace and normalization in the region.
