Russian Foreign Ministry: Azerbaijan provided significant assistance in evacuating Russians from Iran
Azerbaijan provided significant assistance in the evacuation of Russian citizens from Iran.
In an interview with TASS, Alexey Klimov, Director of the Consular Department of the Russian Foreign Ministry, stated this.
"Baku allowed Russians to use the 'Astara' border crossing, which has been closed for individual crossings since 2020, based on a preliminary request from the Russian Embassy in Tehran," the diplomat noted.
As a reminder, on February 28, the United States and Israel launched a military operation against Iran. As a result, the country's Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and several high-ranking officials were killed. Following this, the evacuation of foreign citizens from Iran to Azerbaijan began through the 'Astara' border checkpoint.
By March 20, more than 2,000 citizens from 75 countries, including at least 323 Russians, had been evacuated from Iran through Azerbaijani territory.
