Erdogan: Escalation in the region again highlighted the strategic importance of relations between Turkey and the EU

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan held a telephone conversation with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.

This is stated in a message from the Communications Directorate of the Turkish Presidential Administration. During the conversation, issues of relations between Turkey and the EU, as well as regional and international events, were discussed.

President Erdogan stressed that Turkey advocates for compliance with the ceasefire and ensuring peace in the region, as well as for the prompt opening of the Strait of Hormuz.

One of the central topics of the negotiations was strengthening economic integration between Turkey and the EU. President Erdogan stated that the escalation in the region again highlighted the strategic importance of relations between Turkey and the EU. The head of state pointed to the advisability of Ankara's participation in initiatives of the European security strategy, the need to update the Customs Union between Turkey and the EU, as well as the key importance of developing comprehensive cooperation between Ankara and Brussels.
