Media: von der Leyen to talk with Pashinyan on Thursday
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen is expected to hold talks with Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan on Thursday, the European outlet Politico reports, citing unnamed officials.
"European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen is expected to speak with Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan as early as tomorrow," the report states.
In spring 2025, Armenia adopted a law on the republic's intention to join the European Union, although the bloc itself has not offered the country membership. The Armenian prime minister stated that Yerevan recognizes the incompatibility of simultaneous membership in the EU and the EAEU, but the country will align its agenda with both unions for as long as possible.
As Russian President Vladimir Putin noted, Armenia should decide as soon as possible on participation in the EU or the EAEU, in which case a path of "soft and intelligent divorce" would be possible. The situation surrounding Armenia was discussed at the EAEU summit. The leaders of Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, and Kyrgyzstan adopted a joint statement on May 29 stating that they share the position on the need to hold a nationwide referendum in Armenia on joining the EU or remaining in the EAEU.
