WHO: number of hantavirus cases from MV Hondius rises to 13

The number of detected hantavirus infection cases linked to the outbreak on board the cruise ship MV Hondius in Spain has increased to 13.

This was reported by World Health Organization Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, according to TASS.

Earlier, CNN, citing the Spanish Ministry of Health, reported a second confirmed case of infection among Spanish passengers of the liner.

According to the agency, a positive test result was detected in one of 14 Spaniards evacuated from the ship and placed in quarantine at the Gómez Ulla military hospital in Madrid on May 10. The patient was transferred to a strict isolation ward and is under medical supervision.

The country's Ministry of Health confirmed the first case of infection in a Spanish passenger of MV Hondius on May 12.

International health services are investigating the hantavirus outbreak on board the ship after three passengers died shortly after the liner left Argentina in April.

Some passengers were disembarked on the island of Saint Helena, while the rest left the ship in the Canary Islands and were sent to their home countries.
