EU extends anti-Russian sanctions for a year due to human rights violations
The EU Council announced on Tuesday its decision to extend for one year, until May 28, 2027, the restrictive measures against individuals responsible for "serious violations and abuses of human rights, for the suppression of civil society."
The decision also applies to those whom the EU considers guilty of "persecution of the democratic opposition, undermining democracy and the rule of law in Russia."
The council's communiqué notes that these EU restrictive measures currently apply to 72 individuals and one legal entity.
Assets of individuals and legal entities included in the EU sanctions regime are subject to freezing. EU citizens and companies are prohibited from providing them with financial resources. Individuals are also subject to a ban on travel to the EU territory or transit through it.
