Scientists decipher inscription on Mount Ilandag

The inscription on Mount Ilandag became known to the scientific world about 30 years ago. For the first time, geologists who worked in the region during the Soviet period reported this monument to the Academy of Sciences.

Doctor of Historical Sciences, Professor Vali Bakhshaliev, said in an interview with Report that materials for studying the inscription were sent to Italy, where as a result of the research conducted, the text was deciphered and read.

It turned out that the inscription is connected with Urartian rulers who carried out a campaign against Nakhchivan from the northern direction.

"The inscription mentions the names of the Urartian ruler Ishpuini and his son Menua, who later also became a ruler. The source notes that they, having passed through the village of Erazin, crossed the Araz River through the area called Arshin at that time, and headed to the country of Pluadi. Here they made sacrifices in honor of the god Haldi and the ruler's wife."

The scientist noted that the Urartians organized attacks on Nakhchivan from several directions - both from the north and from the side of the current Sadarak region.

"At that time, a powerful tribal union existed on this territory - the Ituni Confederation. For this reason, the Urartian campaigns ended in failure, and they were forced to retreat to the south."
