Azerbaijan’s emergency ministry appeals to population over sharp weather deterioration

Azerbaijan’s Emergency Situations Ministry has urged citizens to strictly observe safety rules in connection with the forecasted deterioration of weather conditions across the country.

According to the National Hydrometeorology Service, rainy weather in a number of regions will continue until the evening of June 28. At the same time, heavy downpours are expected in Baku and on the Absheron Peninsula during the night of June 27–28. Flooding is possible in some areas, short-term mudflows and flash floods on mountain rivers, as well as thunderstorms and squally winds.

In this regard, the ministry has published a list of key recommendations for the population:

- In case of threat of floods and mudflows: stay at a safe distance from bodies of water and hazardous zones. In the event of a sharp rise in water level, immediately move to the nearest elevation and follow the instructions of rescuers.

- During a thunderstorm: disconnect household electrical appliances and refrain from telephone conversations. When outdoors, do not approach power lines, lightning rods, or antennas, and do not take shelter under tall trees. Inside a vehicle, stop moving, close the windows, and wait out the storm.

- In case of strong wind: avoid being near light structures, temporary buildings, billboards, trees, and power lines.

- Fire safety: observe fire-handling rules with particular strictness, as strong winds significantly complicate efforts to extinguish possible fires.

- Water safety: the ministry emphasizes that swimming in the sea is strictly prohibited due to strong winds. Owners of small vessels are also prohibited from going out on the water.

The ministry reminded that neglecting safety rules poses a direct threat to life. In the event of emergencies, it is necessary to immediately call the hotline “112.”
