Large-scale projects for creating new reservoirs are being implemented in Azerbaijan
"Currently, agriculture accounts for approximately 5–6% of Azerbaijan's GDP."
As reported by 1news.az with reference to APA, this was stated by the Minister of Agriculture Majnun Mammadov during panel discussions at the conference "Modern Agricultural Cooperation as the Foundation of Sustainable Development and a Guarantee of Food Security" held in Baku.
The minister noted that more than 25% of the population's employment is also in the agricultural sector: "From this perspective, we understand that agriculture plays both a significant economic and an extremely important social role. That is why we must approach the development and formulation of agricultural development policies in Azerbaijan through this lens.
There are challenges in the sector, particularly related to climate. Additionally, new challenges create security issues that we observe today in the region, the Gulf zone, and Ukraine.
Regarding the issue of water scarcity, 70% of our water resources come from abroad."
According to him, various steps are currently being taken to address this problem: "First of all, work is underway to create reservoirs and water collection systems. Regardless of the scale—whether small, medium, or large facilities—the government is now implementing large-scale projects across the country.
The second important aspect for proper management of water resources is the transition from transporting water through open, particularly earthen canals, to concrete canals and even closed systems, especially through pipelines."
