Cuban foreign ministry calls U.S. accusation against Raul Castro 'despicable'
Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez called the accusation brought by U.S. Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche against former Cuban President Raul Castro and other officials for "conspiracy to murder U.S. citizens" "despicable."
"The revolutionary government most resolutely condemns the despicable accusation brought by the U.S. Department of Justice on May 20 and promoted for several weeks against the leader of the Cuban revolution, General Raul Castro Ruz," Rodriguez wrote on the social network X.
According to the head of Cuban diplomacy, this baseless accusation is nothing more than another desperate attempt by forces hostile to Cuba to construct a false narrative, exacerbating unilateral coercive measures that include an unjust and genocidal energy blockade and threats of military attack, in order to justify the cruel collective punishment applied to the noble Cuban people.
Rodriguez stressed that the revolutionary government offers Castro "full and unconditional" support. "Cuba reaffirms its commitment to peace and its determination to exercise the inalienable right to legitimate self-defense recognized by the U.N. Charter. The Cuban people most strongly and resolutely reaffirm their unwavering determination to defend the homeland and the socialist revolution, as well as their full, unconditional and unchanging support for the leader of the Cuban revolution, General Raul Castro Ruz," he added.
Earlier, Blanche announced during a press conference in Miami as part of Cuba Independence Day celebrations that the U.S. had charged former Cuban leader Castro.
"Today we are making public an indictment charging Raul Castro and several other individuals with conspiracy to murder four U.S. citizens," he said.
Blanche also stated that the 94-year-old Castro, brother of Fidel Castro, and several other individuals he did not name are charged, among other things, with involvement in the 1996 downing by Cuban air forces of planes belonging to the humanitarian organization Brothers to the Rescue and other crimes.
