Largest sunspot group of 2026 forms on sun
Sunspot group 4478 has reached the largest sizes among other groups of 2026.
This was reported in the Telegram channel of the Laboratory of Solar Astronomy IKI RAS.
"The Sun has the largest active region of the year. <…> Seriously, sunspot group 4478 has reached the largest sizes among all groups of 2026," the message says.
According to scientists, its area is about 1 200 units. It is noted that the previous largest sunspot group No. 4366, which produced an X8.1 flare and broke the record of the 21st century for the total number of strong flares, had a peak area of 1 100.
Scientists noted that there is no actual activity in this region yet.
