Rubio says Strait of Hormuz will be open 'one way or another'
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that the Strait of Hormuz will remain open "one way or another."
He said this while commenting on U.S. strikes on targets in Iran, Reuters reported.
"The straits must be open, they will be open one way or another, so they must be open," Rubio told reporters.
According to the secretary of state, agreeing on the terms of a future agreement with Iran could take several more days.
Earlier, Fox News, citing U.S. military officials, reported that the United States struck an air defense missile system in the Iranian port of Bandar Abbas and attacked two Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps boats that were allegedly attempting to lay naval mines.
The network's sources emphasized that the strikes were "defensive, not offensive" and are not viewed as an attempt to disrupt the current ceasefire regime.
In recent days, negotiations between Washington and Tehran on a possible peace agreement have intensified. As Axios reported, the draft document provides for extending the ceasefire regime for another 60 days.
On May 23, U.S. President Donald Trump stated that the parties had already begun discussing the final aspects and details of the future agreement. He also noted that under a possible deal, the Strait of Hormuz would be open.
Later, Trump clarified that the negotiation process is developing constructively, but there is no need to rush to conclude an agreement in order to avoid possible mistakes.
