Media: Britain plans to sell 100 thousand tons of oil from tanker Smyrtos
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer is considering the possibility of selling more than 100 thousand tons of oil from the tanker Smyrtos detained in the English Channel to transfer the proceeds to Ukraine.
This was reported by the newspaper The Daily Telegraph, citing sources.
As the publication noted, many British officials believe that the oil from the vessel now belongs to their country, and now London can decide how to dispose of it. According to the newspaper, British ministers plan to put the Urals brand oil that was on board the tanker up for auction.
The newspaper added that the market value of the oil is about £35 million, and the British government is considering a proposal to transfer the proceeds to the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
On June 14, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, in a joint statement with the Ministry of Defense, said that British military forces had seized the tanker Smyrtos in the English Channel, allegedly belonging to the so-called Russian shadow fleet.
