Georgian prime minister calls restoring relations with US a priority for Tbilisi
Restoring cooperation and strategic partnership with the US is a priority task for the government of Georgia.
This is stated in the annual report of Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze.
"For the Georgian government, cooperation and strategic partnership with the US is important and a priority. The task of the Georgian government is to achieve a reset of relations with the US, which implies the restoration of equal, justice-based relations taking into account the interests of the parties in all directions," the prime minister's report on the implementation of the government program for the period from June 2025 to May 2026, published on the parliament's website, says.
As the head of government noted, Georgia is conducting an active political dialogue with US representatives, and the Georgian Foreign Ministry is working on forming a new bilateral agenda.
From February to March 2026, Georgia was visited by several delegations from the US Congress and administration. Representatives of the Georgian Foreign Ministry also visited Washington. Kobakhidze held a telephone conversation with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio at the end of March. In February, in Milan at the opening ceremony of the Winter Olympic Games, negotiations took place between Georgian President Mikheil Kavelashvili and Deputy Prime Minister, Foreign Minister Maka Bochorishvili with US Vice President JD Vance and Rubio, the report says.
Relations between Tbilisi and Washington deteriorated significantly in 2024 after Georgia adopted the law on foreign agents. After the Georgian prime minister's statement on November 28, 2024, about freezing the process of opening negotiations on Georgia's accession to the EU, the US State Department suspended strategic partnership with the republic. The Georgian authorities, even before the election of Donald Trump as president, repeatedly stated that they pinned hopes on a change of power in the US and a reset of relations with Washington. The Georgian leadership also repeatedly stated that it was waiting for reciprocal steps from the US.
