Pashinyan: only Armenia itself can discuss Armenia's status in the EAEU
Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan stated that only Armenia itself can discuss Armenia's status in the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU).
"Regarding the status in the EAEU, according to EAEU regulations, only Armenia itself, that is, the member country that can decide to withdraw—there is no other procedure—can discuss its status in the EAEU. But we can discuss any issue; I believe our partners may have questions, and we will eagerly answer all questions," the Armenian prime minister said in a conversation with journalists.
On May 9, Russian President Vladimir Putin stated that Yerevan should decide as soon as possible on the question of participation in the EU or the EAEU, in which case a path of "intelligent divorce" would be possible.
The Parliament of Armenia on March 26, 2025, during the second and final reading, adopted a law on the start of the process of the republic's accession to the European Union. Armenian Prime Minister Pashinyan noted that this would not mean the automatic launch of the process of Yerevan joining the community, since this issue requires a referendum. As Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexey Overchuk stated, Russia views these actions as the beginning of the republic's exit from the Eurasian Economic Union. According to him, accession to the EU is incompatible with the country's membership in the EAEU.
