Rubio calls fees on ships in Strait of Hormuz unacceptable
The American administration considers unacceptable the levying of fees on vessels in international waters, especially in the Strait of Hormuz.
This was reported by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio in Helsingborg, where a meeting of NATO foreign ministers will take place.
"Regarding the [Hormuz] Strait, Iran is trying to introduce a system of fees for passage through it. By the way, they are trying to convince Oman to join this fee system on the international waterway. No country in the world should agree to this. I do not know of any country in the world that would support this, except Iran, but no country in the world should agree to this," Rubio said after a conversation with alliance Secretary General Mark Rutte.
"I do not know anyone in the world who would support a system of charging fees for passage on an international waterway; it is simply unacceptable. This cannot happen. If it happens in the Strait of Hormuz, it will happen in five other places around the world. Why would countries around the world not then say: 'Well, we want to do this too,'" the secretary of state added.
