Former French prime minister Attal intends to participate in the 2027 presidential elections
Former French prime minister and leader of the centrist presidential party Renaissance Gabriel Attal announced his intention to participate in the presidential elections of the republic.
“I have decided to put forward my candidacy for the presidential elections,” he said during a rally in the Aveyron department in southern France. The meeting was streamed on Attal’s page on X.
The 37-year-old former prime minister, who held the post from January to September 2024, stated that he intends to restore optimism and a drive for development to the French people, contrasting this with the current policy, which he described as “managing decline.” According to him, citizens are constantly being told that the future will inevitably be worse than the present, and the only thing left for them is to try to mitigate the consequences of this deterioration for themselves personally.
The first round of the presidential elections in France is scheduled for April 2027. A specific date has not yet been set; it must take place 20-35 days before the expiration of the term of the current president Emmanuel Macron on May 13, 2027. If in the first round none of the candidates for the post of head of state receives more than 50% of the votes, the two candidates who receive the largest number of votes will participate in the second round of voting, which is held two weeks later. Macron, upon the expiration of his second presidential term, will no longer be able to run for the post of head of state due to the restrictions prescribed in the constitution.
