EU countries agree on creation of overseas centers for migrants
EU countries and the European Parliament have reached a principled agreement on tightening European migration rules, including the creation of overseas deportation centers for asylum seekers.
This is stated in a statement issued in Brussels by the Cypriot presidency of the Council of the EU.
"The EU Council and the European Parliament have reached a preliminary agreement that will allow the launch of accelerated and more effective pan-European procedures for the return of persons illegally present on the territory of the EU," the statement says.
As previously reported by the EU Council, the discussed package of proposals includes a clause on the creation of migration camps outside the EU in countries that agree to host such camps. There, asylum seekers who have been rejected by the migration authorities of EU countries will be able to await the consideration of their appeals for expulsion from the EU, or stay until the issue of their return to their homeland is resolved.
In the coming weeks, this document should be legally approved at a meeting of the EU Council and at a session of the European Parliament, which after agreeing on the compromise text becomes a simple formality.
