In May precipitation in Baku and Absheron exceeded the norm 7 times
In May in Baku and on the Absheron Peninsula, air temperature exceeded the climatic norm for 22 days and was below the norm for 9 days.
As 1news.az reports, this was stated by Nazim Mahmudov, head of the National Hydrometeorological Service.
According to him, the average monthly temperature was +18 °C, which is 1 °C above the climatic norm.
The maximum temperature on the peninsula was recorded on May 13 in the settlement of Mashtaga and amounted to +32 °C, and in the regions of the country — on May 28 in Kurdamir, where the air warmed up to +33 °C. The minimum temperature in Baku and on the Absheron was registered on May 5 in Mashtaga (+9 °C), and in the high-mountain areas — on May 9 in Shahdag, where the thermometer dropped to −2 °C.
Nazim Mahmudov noted that rainy weather was observed on a number of days during the month, and wet snow and snow fell in the mountainous areas. In some areas, precipitation was torrential and intense in nature.
According to him, in total precipitation was observed in the regions of the country for 31 days. The largest amount of precipitation fell in Baku and on the Absheron — 148 mm, which is 749% of the monthly norm. In the Balakan-Sheki zone (Kishchay-Sheki) 206 mm of precipitation fell, or 199% of the norm, and in the Lankaran-Astara zone (Bilasuvar) — 85 mm, or 265% of the monthly norm.
As a result of snowfalls, the maximum height of the snow cover was recorded on May 9 in Shahdag and amounted to 9 cm.
The head of the service also reported that in May cases of hail were noted in various regions of Azerbaijan. It was observed on the territory of Baku and Absheron, as well as in Gadabay, Shamkir, Shusha, Lachin, Gabala, Sheki, Gakh, Balakan, Zagatala, Yardymli, Gusar, Ismayilli, Agstafa, Dashkasan, Kalbajar and other regions.
The diameter of hailstones in most cases ranged from 4 to 20 mm. The largest hail was recorded on May 29 in the villages of Garabulag and Boyuk Soyudlu of the Oguz district, where the size of hailstones reached 15–30 mm.
In addition, according to Nazim Mahmudov, in May 2026, due to windy weather, 10 yellow and orange level warnings were issued.
In Baku and on the Absheron, windy weather was observed for 11 days, in the regions of the country — for 18 days. The maximum wind speed both in the capital and in the regions reached 28 m/s.
