Iran's foreign ministry says US strikes near Hormuz violated UN Charter and memorandum terms

US strikes on Iran violated the UN Charter and the terms of the memorandum of understanding between the Islamic Republic of Iran and the United States, Iran's Foreign Ministry stated.

«These brutal attacks targeting Iran's coastal observation facilities constitute a clear violation of paragraph 4 of article 2 of the UN Charter, as well as a direct violation of the first paragraph of the memorandum on the cessation of war,» the statement from official Tehran said, published on Saturday in the foreign ministry's Telegram channel.

The document notes that at the same time Israel «in coordination with the US carried out an attack on Lebanon, which is also a clear violation of the first paragraph of the aforementioned memorandum».

«The Islamic Republic of Iran will defend its sovereignty, security and national interests with all its might,» the statement said.

It emphasizes that Iran's retaliatory strikes were defensive in nature. «It is obvious that responsibility for the consequences of the current situation lies with the aggressor and violator of obligations — the United States, as well as with those who in any way facilitate the US committing aggressive actions against Iran,» the document notes.

Iran's Foreign Ministry called on all states on the southern coast of the Persian Gulf not to allow their territory and resources to be used to carry out aggressive actions against Iran.
