Turkey to raise fees for ships passing through Bosporus and Dardanelles
Turkish authorities will raise fees for ships passing through the Bosporus and Dardanelles straits by 15% starting July 1 as part of the annual tariff review.
The fee will now be $6.7 per ton, NTV television channel reported.
Since last July, $5.83 per ton has been charged for passage through the Turkish straits. The fee amount is calculated based on the tonnage of vessels under the 1936 Montreux Convention, which regulates navigation in the Bosporus and Dardanelles.
Turkish authorities have been raising transit fees for vessels through the straits once a year since 2022. Before that, the fee was $0.8 per ton.
According to the Turkish Ministry of Transport, more than 40,000 vessels passed through the Bosporus and Dardanelles in 2025. On average, fees per vessel range from $15,000 to $30,000. Funds received from them mainly go to financing the work of coastal services, rescuers, medical personnel, and the elimination of consequences of maritime accidents.
