Baghaei calls U.S. coercion of third countries to halt trade with Iran illegal
The announcement of new U.S. economic sanctions against Iran is something more than a continuing illegal "economic war" against a single country. It is a claim to extraterritorial sovereignty over every independent state that is a member of the UN.
As 1news.az reports, this was stated by Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baghaei on his page on the social network X.
According to him, the U.S. policy of coercing third countries into severing trade and economic ties with Iran contradicts international law.
"No state — each of which is subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of its own sovereign — may compel foreign banks, businesses or airports to abandon lawful trade with a third state. Such secondary sanctions have no basis whatsoever in international law... Economic coercion aimed at forcing a sovereign state to change its lawful political choices constitutes a manifest act contrary to international law," Baghaei wrote.
Earlier, U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stated that any business dealings with Iran would face harsh pressure from the American government.
