My son is being tortured and forced to slander our state — mother of an Azerbaijani citizen unjustifiably detained in Russia
The mother of Azerbaijani citizen Yadulla Ramiz oglu Rufullayev, who was detained by Russian law enforcement agencies, stated that her son was unjustifiably arrested and subjected to brutal torture and psychological pressure by Russian investigators.
Aliya Rufullayeva reported this to the Trend news agency.
According to her, her son worked as a truck driver and supported three children. The Russian side charged him under Article 276.1 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (espionage), which, according to the mother, is fabricated and not based on any evidence.
“The vehicle driven by my son fully passed customs control and was cleared to return to Azerbaijan. However, Russian law enforcement agencies, taking advantage of the fact that he does not know the Russian language, forced him to sign forged documents. He has been illegally held in custody for 1 year and 1 month already. During the investigation, Russian investigators put a bag over his head, taped his mouth shut, and tortured him with electric current for hours. The Russian side is forcing him to give slanderous testimony against the Azerbaijani state. My son refused these illegal demands of the Russian agencies, stating: ‘I would rather serve 20 years than betray my state,’” she said.
Noting that Yadulla Rufullayev is the family’s sole breadwinner and that the family is in a difficult social situation, the mother also stated that the work of the state-appointed lawyers assigned by the Russian side is biased and inactive.
The next court hearing in the case is expected to take place on August 31.
In connection with this issue, official appeals were sent to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan, the Embassy of Azerbaijan in Russia, the Ombudsman’s Office, and other relevant state bodies.
A. Rufullayeva emphasized that, in her opinion, her son is being subjected to arbitrariness and discrimination by the Russian authorities solely because he is a citizen of Azerbaijan, and she asked the state to provide support in protecting his rights and securing his release.
