FIFA harshly punishes Argentina after the 2026 World Cup: a $321,000 fine and stadium restrictions

FIFA's Disciplinary Committee has fined the Argentine Football Association (AFA) $321,000 following the 2026 World Cup.

The reason was several violations at once, including political demonstrations, improper conduct by the team, racist and discriminatory statements, as well as breaches of safety rules at matches.

In addition to the fine, the AFA will have to play two home matches with the stadium filled to no more than 50%. At the same time, $100,000 of the penalty amount will be directed to a program to combat discrimination.

FIFA paid particular attention to the episode after the semifinal against England. The Argentine players unfurled a banner reading «Las Malvinas son Argentinas» (“The Malvinas Islands are Argentine”), which was deemed a political action.
