Mirzoyan rules out 'political divorce' of Armenia with Russia

Armenia does not intend to create tension in relations with Russia, said the head of the republic's Foreign Ministry Ararat Mirzoyan at a press conference with Lithuanian Foreign Minister Kestutis Budris in Yerevan.

Responding to a journalist's question about the possibility of a "political divorce" with Russia, Mirzoyan noted that Armenia does not plan to sever relations with any of its partners, Sputnik Armenia reports.

"Politics and diplomacy, in principle, do not know such 'divorces.' We do not intend to introduce tension into relations between Russia and Armenia. We are partners, we have numerous ties, and we are committed to developing mutually beneficial cooperation in an atmosphere of constructive dialogue," the minister said.

According to him, problems certainly exist between the countries, but such issues arise in all international relations and must be resolved through discussions.

"In the end, all parties — I am speaking in theory with regard to any relations — must respect each other's right to independently make decisions on various issues," Mirzoyan noted.

Speaking about a possible choice between the European Union and the Eurasian Economic Union, the minister emphasized that even without statements from Russia, Armenia understands that it is impossible to belong to both structures at the same time.

According to him, Yerevan continues to move closer to the EU, and a final decision will be made "when the time comes for it."

Earlier, Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan stated that the question of choosing between the EU and the EAEU should be decided by the people of Armenia, determining which strategy is more promising and beneficial for the country.

On May 9, Russian President Vladimir Putin said at a press conference that Yerevan should decide as soon as possible on participation in the EU or the EAEU, allowing for the possibility of an "intelligent divorce."

In turn, Pashinyan stated to journalists on May 11 that Armenia remains a full member of the EAEU, and a referendum is possible only if an "objective need" arises.
