Annalena Baerbock announces her departure from politics
After completing her work as President of the United Nations General Assembly, Annalena Baerbock will leave politics and the public sphere to become a private individual and teach at Columbia University.

"For me, this really is such a moment: that's it, now I am a private individual," Baerbock concluded, handing over the symbolic gavel of the President of the UN General Assembly to her successor — the former head of Bangladesh's Foreign Ministry, Khalilur Rahman.
His selection created particular tension, since Baerbock advocated for a more transparent process, which provoked sharp rejection from the permanent members of the Security Council, who are accustomed to deciding this matter behind closed doors. In response, the United States accused her of wanting to be a "diplomatic superstar."
Baerbock took up the post of President of the 80th session of the UN General Assembly in September 2025. Before that, from December 2021 to May 2025, she was Germany's Minister of Foreign Affairs, becoming the first woman in that position.
