The United States has allocated an additional $80 million to combat the Ebola fever outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and Uganda.

The total amount of financial assistance has reached $112 million, said Massad Boulos, senior adviser to the U.S. president on African and Arab affairs.

"The United States has allocated another $80 million in addition to the $32 million already provided to implement much-needed measures to combat Ebola fever. <...> We thank our partners on the ground, as well as the governments of the DRC and Uganda," Boulos wrote on his X page.

The authorities of the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda announced on May 15 the start of an Ebola fever outbreak in their countries.

It is caused by the Ebola-Bundibugyo virus, which was first detected in the fall of 2007 in Uganda. About 1,000 suspected cases of infection and about 220 deaths have been registered in the DRC, and eight and one respectively in Uganda.
