At least nine police officers killed in terrorist attack in Pakistan

At least 9 police officers were killed and another 28 were injured as a result of a terrorist attack in Pakistan's northwestern province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

This was reported by the newspaper Dawn, citing local authorities.

Militants of the group "Fitna al-Khawarij" (previously known as "Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan" or the "Pakistani Taliban Movement"), which is banned in the country, attacked a checkpoint of security forces in the Hangu district, said the region's inspector general of police, Zulfiqar Hameed. He added that 15 terrorists were killed as a result of the police response.

The provinces of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan, which border Afghanistan, accounted for 90% of terrorist attacks in Pakistan in 2025. In both regions, various armed groups carry out attacks on Pakistani security forces and civilians under the pretext of defending the rights of ethnic minorities — the Pashtuns and the Baloch. Islamabad accuses the Afghan authorities of providing shelter to militants.
