Peter Magyar threatens president with impeachment
The new Hungarian government will initiate impeachment proceedings against the country's president, Tamás Sulyok, in parliament if he refuses to voluntarily vacate his post.
This was stated by Hungarian Prime Minister Peter Magyar after a meeting with the head of state at his official Budapest residence, Sándor Palace.
"I informed the president of the republic that if he does not change his position and does not resign voluntarily, then today I will inform the faction of the ruling Tisza party about our proposals and we will immediately begin the necessary procedures in parliament. I also informed the president that, according to the Fundamental Law, there are several options for depriving him of his powers," Magyar said at a press conference held on the square near Sándor Palace.
The prime minister also noted that, if necessary, the Tisza faction will submit proposals to parliament to amend the Fundamental Law to remove Sulyok from office. Magyar claimed that he had failed to cope with the duties of head of state and in recent years had not prevented the abuses committed by the previous government of Viktor Orbán.
