Mirziyoyev and Steinmeier launch Volkswagen plant in Uzbekistan

Uzbekistan President Shavkat Mirziyoyev and German Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier launched the production of Volkswagen cars in Tashkent using the large-unit assembly method.

This is reported by the press service of the Uzbek leader.

At the first stage, the assembly of cars from Chinese components will be organized here. In the future, the partners plan to establish a full production cycle in Angren and begin exporting cars to the CIS countries, Central Asia, and the Caucasus.

Previously, Volkswagen was already present in the Uzbek market. In 2020, Uzavtosanoat and Volkswagen Group Rus signed an agreement to produce Caddy light commercial vehicles at the Jizzakh automobile plant in the Jizzakh FEZ. In the summer of the same year, sales of Volkswagen cars began, and in the fall, Škoda, which is part of the concern. But in 2023, Volkswagen sold its Russian business to the Avilon car dealer.

In addition to the automobile plant, the construction of a logistics center in the Andijan region, the production of liquid household detergents, projects for training specialists for the railway industry, and the opening of modern examination centers were launched.

The projects were launched during top-level negotiations held in a narrow format and with the participation of official delegations from the two countries. The parties discussed key issues of further development of Uzbek-German cooperation, strengthening political dialogue, and expanding trade and economic ties. Mirziyoyev particularly emphasized Steinmeier's personal contribution to the development of relations between the European Union and Uzbekistan and the states of Central Asia.

The key topic of the negotiations was cooperation in the trade and investment sphere. Following the results of last year, the volume of mutual trade exceeded $1.4 billion, and since the beginning of the current year, it has grown by another 5%. The volume of German investments in the Uzbek economy in 2025 reached $2 billion. Following the Days of German Economy and the 10th meeting of the German-Uzbek Business Council held in Tashkent in May, a package of investment and trade agreements worth over $1 billion was signed.

The presidents confirmed plans to expand cooperation in industry, energy and the "green" economy, transport and logistics, mining and textile industries, pharmaceuticals, agriculture, education, and healthcare.

Following the negotiations, Mirziyoyev and Steinmeier adopted a joint statement, and agreements were signed on grant funds and preferential financing for the implementation of sustainable urban development projects in Uzbekistan.
