Corruption, clannishness and pressure: Media revealed the reasons for Alen Simonyan's departure

About two dozen representatives of the Civil Contract party actively worked against Speaker of the Armenian Parliament Alen Simonyan and were able to influence Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan's decision on his possible removal.

The newspaper Zhoghovurd writes about this.

According to the publication, in recent months members of the ruling party handed over materials to Pashinyan containing compromising information about Simonyan. They mention alleged corrupt deals, protectionism, the creation of a clan system, as well as cases of humiliation of fellow party members, including women.

According to the newspaper, numerous media publications about the sharp increase in the property of Simonyan and members of his family also influenced the prime minister's position.

"The prime minister, taking into account the mood within the party, did not want to go against the position of a significant part of the team," Zhoghovurd writes.

As the publication claims, the following people spoke out against Simonyan: deputies Hayk Sargsyan, Armen Khachatryan, Hayk Konjoryan, Ripsime Unanyan, Ruben Rubinyan, Julietta Azaryan, Lusine Badalyan, Zaruhi Batoyan, Ripsime Grigoryan, Arpi Davoyan, Lilit Minasyan, Lilit Stepanyan, Andranik Kocharyan, Eriknaz Tigranyan, Hayk Tsirunyan, Minister of High-Tech Industry Mkhitar Hayrapetyan, as well as former deputy Vilen Gabrielyan.

Alen Simonyan has held the post of speaker of parliament since 2021. In the parliamentary elections, he was on the Civil Contract list under number 14 and actively participated in the election campaign, but after the announcement of the results, by decision of the party board, he remained without a position. He also refused the mandate and stated that he intended to rest and "finally put his personal life in order."

It was previously reported that the post of speaker of the Armenian parliament from the ruling party will be taken by current deputy speaker Ruben Rubinyan.
