New bill on anti-Russian sanctions introduced in US Senate

American Senator Richard Blumenthal (Democrat from Connecticut) introduced an updated bill on sanctions against the Russian Federation and buyers of Russian energy resources, developed with the participation of the late Republican Senator Lindsey Graham.

The corresponding publication is posted on the legislator's website.

According to the text of the new version of the bill, named after Graham, it is proposed to introduce restrictions against Russian President Vladimir Putin, the highest Russian military and political leadership, entrepreneurs, state companies and foreign enterprises that provide support to the Russian military-industrial complex. In addition, it is proposed to introduce sanctions against the Bank of Russia, Sberbank and Gazprombank, as well as the largest Russian projects in the energy sector, in particular Yamal LNG, three Arctic LNG projects and future Russian energy projects in the Arctic.

Instead of the previously proposed initiative to introduce 500-percent duties on imports from countries purchasing energy resources from the Russian Federation, it is proposed to impose 100-percent tariffs on the five largest buyers of Russian oil and natural gas, as well as five countries that help Russia circumvent Western sanctions in the energy sector.

Senators also proposed introducing restrictions on the shadow fleet.

On July 14, American President Donald Trump called the chances of passing the bill on anti-Russian sanctions high. The Axios portal later reported that the timing of consideration of this initiative by the US Senate has not yet been determined.
