August 21–September 21 declared "Peace Month" in Azerbaijan
The Commissioner for Human Rights (Ombudsman) of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Sabina Aliyeva, has issued an appeal in connection with the declaration of the "Peace Month" on the occasion of the International Day of Peace.
As AZERTAC reports, the appeal recalls that the International Day of Peace was established by a resolution of the General Assembly of the United Nations (UN) of November 30, 1981. In addition, by a resolution of September 28, 2001, the date of September 21 was designated as the day for the annual observance of this significant date and declared a Day of global ceasefire and non-violence.
The appeal emphasizes that the Republic of Azerbaijan attaches great importance to promoting peace, security, dialogue, and cooperation at the regional and global levels. The initialing of the agreed text of the "Agreement on the Establishment of Peace and Interstate Relations between the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Republic of Armenia" on August 8, 2025, in Washington and the signing of the Joint Declaration following the meeting became an important stage on the path toward the normalization of relations between Azerbaijan and Armenia and the establishment of lasting peace in the region.
"Continuing in 2026 its active participation in international peacekeeping initiatives and its consistent efforts to strengthen global peace and security, our republic joined the Peace Council as a founding state. President Ilham Aliyev signed the Charter of the Council on January 22, 2026, at a ceremony in Davos. Participation in this international organization is one of the important manifestations of Azerbaijan's contribution to the promotion of peace and stability at the regional and global levels.
The declaration by the Commissioner for Human Rights (Ombudsman) of the Republic of Azerbaijan in previous years of the period from August 21 to September 21 as "Peace Month" on the eve of the International Day of Peace, and the holding within this framework of various awareness-raising events in the capital and the regions, has formed an important institutional practice serving the promotion of a culture of peace and human rights. Proceeding from the importance of continuing this practice, taking into account the current appeal of the UN, on the occasion of the upcoming September 21 – the International Day of Peace – we declare the period from August 21 to September 21 of this year in our country as "Peace Month," the appeal states.
"In this regard, we call on state bodies, municipalities, civil society institutions, including non-commercial organizations (public associations and foundations), media entities and trade unions, institutions of science, education, culture, health care and social services, international and local organizations, as well as other relevant structures and the general public, to carry out within the framework of the Month, in accordance with the appeal, conferences, round tables, seminars, trainings, public discussions, competitions, exhibitions, information campaigns and other awareness-raising events and initiatives aimed at strengthening respect for human rights and dignity, the values of tolerance and peaceful coexistence, preventing discrimination, hate speech and violence, as well as educating children and young people in the spirit of a culture of peace.
It is recommended to widely cover information about the events held during the Month in media resources, as well as to share them on social media platforms using the hashtags #SülhAylığı and #PeaceMonth."
