A powerful flare has occurred on the Sun

A flare of the second-highest power class was recorded on the Sun on Friday.

This was reported to TASS by the Institute of Applied Geophysics.

"On August 21 at 12:50 Moscow time (13:50 Baku time), an M1.6 flare was registered in the X-ray range," the statement said.

It is emphasized that on Thursday three class M flares and 16 class C flares occurred on the Sun.

It was reported earlier that flares of the highest class — X — are expected on August 21-22.

Depending on the power of the X-ray radiation, solar flares are divided into five classes: A, B, C, M and X. The minimum class A0.0 corresponds to a radiation power in Earth's orbit of 10 nanowatts per square meter. With the transition to the next letter, the power increases tenfold. Flares are usually accompanied by ejections of solar plasma, clouds of which, upon reaching Earth, can provoke magnetic storms.
