Starmer says he is 'fed up' with actions of Trump and Putin
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has stated that he is 'fed up' with how energy bills for British families rise and fall due to the actions of U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin.
He made this statement during an interview on the ITV News podcast 'Talking Politics,' published on Thursday.
'I’m fed up with families across the country seeing their energy bills go up and down, and businesses’ bills too, because of the actions of Putin or Trump around the world,' Starmer said.
The statement comes amid fluctuations in oil prices, which soared during the U.S.-Israel war with Iran and continue to fluctuate under the fragile conditions of a two-week ceasefire.
Starmer added that the world will have to 'wait and see' whether the Strait of Hormuz reopens, noting that the economic consequences are already being felt and that Britain needs greater energy resilience and independence.
Commenting on Trump’s threat to destroy Iran 'as a civilization' if it does not reopen the strait, Starmer said he 'would not use such rhetoric,' adding that Britain’s position is guided by its own principles and values.
Starmer also called Israel’s strikes on Lebanon during the ceasefire a 'mistake,' stating that it 'should not be happening' and must stop immediately.
Notably, shortly after the interview on the same day, Starmer held a phone call with Trump. The Downing Street press office reported that the leaders discussed the need to restore freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz and agreed to further consultations.
