Vance advises Vatican to focus on moral issues, not politics
The Vatican should focus on moral issues rather than commenting on American politics.
This opinion was expressed by U.S. Vice President JD Vance.
"I definitely think that in some cases, the Vatican would be better off dealing with moral issues, with what is happening in the Catholic Church, and allowing the American president to determine U.S. policy," he stated during a broadcast on Fox News.
Vance was commenting on the conflict between U.S. President Donald Trump and Pope Leo XIV, which arose due to disagreements over the issue of Iran.
Earlier, the American leader, responding to anti-war statements by Leo XIV, wrote on Truth Social that "this Pope is weak on issues of crime and foreign policy." Trump claimed that if it weren’t for his presidency, an American would not have been elected pope.
Leo XIV has expressed concern in recent weeks about the escalation in the Middle East due to the aggression of Israel and the U.S. against Iran. The Pope has been quite critical of the U.S. president and his entourage. In particular, he called Trump’s threat to destroy civilization in Iran completely unacceptable and objected to Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth, who urged people to pray for the victory of American soldiers "in the name of Jesus Christ." As the Pope stated at the time, the pursuit of dominance is "alien to the path of Jesus Christ." On April 11, the pontiff delivered an anti-war sermon in St. Peter’s Basilica. "Death subjugates those who have turned away from God to make themselves and their power a mute, blind, and deaf idol. Enough of worshiping oneself and money! Enough of demonstrating strength! Enough of war!" Leo XIV declared.
