Peskov: Russia and Hungary unlikely to become friends under new prime minister

Russia and Hungary are unlikely to become friends with the arrival of the new Hungarian Prime Minister, Peter Magyar, head of the Tisa party. However, the position of a country's leader implies a high degree of pragmatism, and Moscow hopes for such an approach from Budapest, stated Dmitry Peskov, the press secretary of the Russian President.

"We have heard various statements. He (Peter Magyar - note by TASS) has already said that he is ready to talk with Putin, but [Russia and Hungary] will never become friends," the Kremlin representative emphasized in a comment to Vesti.

"In politics, it’s one thing when you are not yet in the leader’s chair, and you can make statements. When you sit in that chair, other, more, let’s say, pragmatic understandings come into play," Peskov explained. "Well, we will hope for that."

Russia will focus on the specific actions of the new Hungarian government, Peskov noted.

"In this case, we have a mutual readiness [to conduct a pragmatic dialogue], and then we will orient ourselves based on the specific steps of the new Hungarian government," the Kremlin representative clarified.
