BIG: Guadeloupe society concerned over death of man at the hands of French gendarmerie
On April 12 of this year, one person died in an incident involving French law enforcement in the town of Le Moule in Guadeloupe.
According to preliminary information, non-lethal tasers were initially used against the suspect during the incident, but then one of the French gendarmerie officers opened fire with a firearm. As a result, the victim succumbed to the injuries sustained. Representatives of the prosecutor's office were dispatched to the scene, preliminary investigative measures were conducted, and the investigation was assigned to the investigative department of Pointe-à-Pitre. The gendarmerie officer who used the weapon was detained and placed under investigation. It is reported that clashes between local residents and the police occurred in the area following the incident.
As reported by AZERTAC, this was reflected in a statement by the Baku Initiative Group (BIG) regarding the death in Guadeloupe and the public reaction.
It is noted that the Guadeloupean organization 'Unity Against Gendarmerie Violence' sharply condemned the incident. The organization's statement emphasizes that a man named Liber Argelier died as a result of unjustified shooting by the military police, and this incident is regarded as 'yet another example of state violence.'
The organization linked this incident to previous similar cases of death, stating that such actions are systematic, noted that law enforcement authorities abused their powers, and demanded a full investigation of the incident, clarification of the reasons for the shooting, and its legality.
The statement also includes a call for public activism to ensure justice, hold those responsible accountable, and prevent similar incidents.
The organization expressed condolences to the family of the deceased and noted that the incident has caused serious concern in Guadeloupe.
