Caspian countries may prepare a 50-year sea level forecast
Russia proposes to intensify the activities of the climate working group within the Coordination Committee on Hydrometeorology of the Caspian Sea (CASPCOM) to develop a 50-year forecast of the sea's level.
This was stated by Deputy Minister of Natural Resources and Ecology of the Russian Federation Dmitry Tetenkin, speaking at a session of the Regional Environmental Summit in Astana.
"We propose to intensify the activities of the established climate working group within CASPCOM, which at the expert level can prepare an assessment of long-term forecasts, up to 50 years, in our opinion, of the Caspian level. We urge the Caspian states to unite efforts to adopt comprehensive solutions to mitigate the consequences of sea level fluctuations and to provide global support to CASPCOM in 2026 at the 30th session of the committee in Turkmenistan," he said.
Tetenkin added that "it is necessary to launch a five-party interaction mechanism to develop joint scientific approaches" for studying sea level fluctuations. According to him, the CASPCOM mechanism, established in 1994, is a unique information resource whose potential has not been fully realized.
CASPCOM was created by the national hydrometeorological agencies of the Caspian countries - Azerbaijan, Iran, Kazakhstan, Russia, and Turkmenistan.
