Speaker of Armenian parliament refuses to apologize for statements about Belarus
The Speaker of the Armenian Parliament, Alen Simonyan, believes that the scandal surrounding his statement about Belarus's lack of independence has been exaggerated by the media, and he does not regret his words.
“What should I regret? I don’t understand. Armenia will not be a province, Armenia will not be politically dependent, Armenia will raise the level of its sovereignty, and the example of Belarus is unacceptable for my country [...]. I believe that this issue with Belarus has been somewhat inflated, and it is you who are inflating it more,” he told journalists at a briefing in the parliament.
According to the Speaker of the Parliament, each country chooses its political course independently, while the Armenian authorities have “chosen the path of democracy.” Simonyan also criticized the Belarusian leadership, advising them to focus on “the process of growing a large amount of potatoes.”
On May 1, Speaker of the Armenian Parliament Alen Simonyan, in an interview with public television, claimed that Russia is attempting to conduct a political operation to change the government in the republic. In doing so, he contrasted the situation in Armenia with the situation in Belarus, which, according to him, is “governed” from Russia.
On May 5, a protest was lodged with the temporary chargé d'affaires of Armenia in Minsk due to Yerevan's actions.
