EU foreign ministers to discuss Brussels' list of demands to Russia on Ukraine in late May
EU foreign ministers will discuss Brussels' list of demands to Moscow for possible negotiations on Ukraine in late May.
This was announced by the head of the EU diplomatic service, Kaja Kallas, during a press conference in Moldova.
"Before we start a dialogue with Russia, we must decide what we want to talk about with them. Therefore, I have proposed to the EU foreign ministers to agree on a list of things we want to achieve from the Russian side," she said, responding to a question about whether the community is indeed exploring the possibility of direct negotiations with Russia to end the conflict with Ukraine.
"So, we will discuss this with the foreign ministers already at the end of May," Kallas noted. Earlier, she had stated that Brussels' provision of €90 billion in military funding to Kyiv should create favorable conditions for Ukraine to secure concessions from Russia.
The Financial Times newspaper on May 7 quoted the President of the European Council, António Costa, who said that he "is negotiating with the leaders of the 27 member states [of the EU] to determine the best way to organize <...> the work and to outline what exactly <...> needs to be discussed with Russia when the right moment comes." In his opinion, the EU has the "potential" for negotiations with Russian President Vladimir Putin. As the publication pointed out, such shifts in the views of European leaders are driven by growing frustration with the actions of US President Donald Trump in resolving the Russian-Ukrainian conflict.
