UN Women representative: "Affordable housing should take into account the needs of women and children"
In the framework of the 13th session of the World Urban Forum (WUF13) in Baku, at the Women's Assembly, UN Women Representative in Georgia Kaori Ishikawa commented on the question of the most effective models of affordable housing for low-income women and women with children to the 1news.az correspondent.
"This is a very, very good question. And I think that the participants of this urban forum should think about it together.
In my opinion, affordable housing should be open to vulnerable groups of the population.
Currently, they are often forced to settle on the very outskirts, which is why they have almost no access to economic activity and spend a huge amount of time on the road.
Affordable housing — possibly with state support and within the social protection system — could provide women, children, and the elderly with a safe space to live. This will allow them not to remain in the role of victims or simply "vulnerable layers," but to continue contributing to national development.
They only need a little help from the private sector, the state, or city authorities so that they can live in safety."
